The amateur sports association C.U.S. Salerno (Salerno University Sports Centre) is a university sports organisation affiliated with the National Federation known as the Italian University Sports Centre (C.U.S.I.), which in turn is affiliated with the F.I.S.U. (International University Sports Federation) and the E.U.S.A. 

C.U.S. Salerno was founded in 1980 thanks to the efforts of the late Carlo Merola, former president of C.U.S. Napoli, and lawyer Lorenzo Lentini, who was elected president of the Centre in 1983. From its inception, with a young and dynamic structure, it has operated in line with its statutory aims and with a view to satisfying the different needs of university students in a fast-growing geographical area. Today, however, C.U.S. Salerno, thanks to the efforts of the Sports Activities Committee, the academic bodies of the University of Salerno and the Centre’s entire management, has taken over and manages a substantial portfolio of university sports facilities in the Fisciano and Baronissi campuses. 

The amateur sports association CUS Salerno organises, at its own facilities and at those it manages to secure in the local area, basic, introductory and advanced courses in no fewer than 48 sports disciplines. Every year, around 5,000 members take part in the activities organised by CUS Salerno. 

CUS Salerno also organises promotional inter-faculty tournaments in futsal, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table football, chess and PlayStation. In addition, where possible, it also organises trials for university students who will be competing in the national university championships in many sports. 

For competitive activities, CUS Salerno is currently affiliated with eight National Sports Federations participating in federation activities in the following sectors: Athletics – Tennis – Table Tennis – Volleyball – Dance – Swimming – Hockey – Badminton. 

CUS SALERNO has always promoted sporting activities through agreements and/or specific partnerships with institutions, local authorities, schools, and/or organisations across the entire region. Furthermore, since 2003, CUS Salerno has been promoting voluntary civil service projects aimed at young people aged between 18 and 28. 

All projects have the general aim of promoting a culture of physical activity and sport, including as a tool for the social inclusion of people with disabilities. The provision of support services and capacity-building for people with disabilities is designed to assist them on their journey towards growth and the attainment of independence, enabling them to lead healthy lives and reducing the risks of marginalisation they face.
