We are just hours away from the opening ceremony of EUG Salerno 2026 – the European Universities Games, held in Italy for the very first time and organised thanks to the synergy between the University of Salerno, CUS Salerno, and ADISURC, with the support of FederCusi and the Campania Region – where we will see the parade of the around 3,000 athletes already present.

“We make no secret of our pride – emphasized Virgilio D’Antonio, Rector of the University of Salerno – in seeing how this extraordinary journey is unfolding. We have been deeply impressed by the enthusiasm and passion shown by the first athletes from the international delegations since the moment they arrived. Our campus has taken on the character of a global village, welcoming athletes from across Europe. Tomorrow, the Opening Ceremony will take place in Salerno, marking a significant milestone for an event that, as we would like to remind everyone, involves the provinces of Salerno and Avellino. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding work being carried out by journalists, because the story that will be told about these Games will be crucial for the future of our University and of the entire region swept up in this wave of youthful energy. We want to send a clear and powerful message: one of peace, dialogue, and confidence in the younger generations. Sport – the Rector added – has a unique ability to bring people together, often more effectively than any other setting. It reaches places where the natural dynamics of our societies sometimes fall short, building bridges, fostering relationships, and creating bonds of friendship that transcend every difference. This is the greatest value of sport: its ability to build communities, encourage meaningful encounters, and remind us that, through play and shared experiences, we can look to the future with greater confidence”.
