Handball and Beach Handball Take Over Salerno!
Salerno will be the first-ever Italian university city to host the European Universities Games. And what better way to kick things off than with a sport that is literally in the city’s sporting DNA? We are, of course, talking about Handball.
Handball at EUG 2026 Salerno
This will be an experience that unites high-level sport with an international university spirit. Here is everything waiting for you on the court and the sand.
Handball: July 27 – August 1
The tournament will light up the Palestra Caporale Palumbo in Salerno and the PalaCapriglia in Pellezzano. A total of 23 teams will compete, split into 12 men’s and 11 women’s squads. The bar is exceptionally high: all eyes are on Romania, the absolute dominators of the 2024 edition in Debrecen. Domenico Testa, Technical Delegate for CUS Salerno, gives us a preview of what we will see:
“We are preparing for a competition with an excellent technical level. We will have the opportunity to host nations that boast a massive tradition in the discipline. We will be there with our men’s representative team, a group made up of university students who form the core of the Salerno squad that has just been promoted to Serie A Silver.”
Beach Handball: July 20-22
If you prefer battles under the sun, do not miss the Beach Handball tournament, from July 20-22 at the Baronissi Campus. 16 teams, 8 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams, are ready to fight it out to snatch the title from the powerhouses of the last edition, such as Hungary (reigning men’s champions) and the University of Malaga (women’s champions).
Pina Napoletano, a legendary figure for the discipline in Salerno, is fired up for the challenge:
“We expect a medium-to-high technical level from this competition. Hungary definitely starts as the tournament favourites. Leading our representative team will be Nicolas Balogh, a key player for the Italian National team, fresh from their historic appearance at the World Championships in Zagreb.”
Whether you are in the stands of the sports halls or courtside on the campus sand, the efforts of the student-athletes and the passion of the crowd will make these days truly unique.
See you in Salerno!
