The Caporal Maggiore Palumbo Gymnasium: The Pride of the European Universities Games Salerno 2026

The Caporal Maggiore Francesco Palumbo Gymnasium will serve as a key venue during the European Universities Games Salerno 2026, set against the enchanting backdrop of Piazza della Libertà for the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, July 18, 2026. Among others, it will also host the Handball and Futsal competitions.

The historic home of PDO Salerno, a leading club in national women’s Handball, the Palumbo gym has recently undergone a brilliant upgrading operation. This project was unveiled by the Commander of the 19th Cavalry (Cavalleggeri Guide), Colonel Andrea Enzo Gottardo Crivellotto, to the Rector of UNISA, Virgilio D’Antonio, and the President of CUS Salerno, Lorenzo Lentini.

“Our collaboration with the Guide Regiment makes us very proud,” commented the Rector. “The opportunity provided by the EUG 2026 has further strengthened a deep-rooted bond of mutual esteem. As we have always stated, one of the most important missions of this event is the clear desire to leave a legacy for the local area. The refurbishment work carried out on the Palumbo gym, a historic landmark of Salerno sport, confirms this intention.”

“We hold great respect and deep admiration for the University of Salerno, the city that hosts our Regiment, and Salerno sport,” commented the Colonel. “This facility, normally used by one of the most successful clubs in Italy, will be at the complete disposal of the Games organisers, and this occasion will serve to confirm our active presence within the Salerno community.”

“This facility,” continued the President of CUS Salerno, Lorenzo Lentini, “is an authentic jewel whose value increases exponentially by virtue of its location. The Futsal and Handball competitions to be hosted here will find a magnificent setting.”

The meeting, which took place in an atmosphere of great serenity and mutual warmth, was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Salerno, Nino Savastano.

“When institutions work together in great harmony, results are not long in coming. EUG Salerno 2026 represents a massive opportunity for the city of Salerno and, more generally, for the entire region,” he emphasised. “We must thank the University of Salerno for the extraordinary organisation put in place and for the exceptional coordination work it is carrying out among all the institutions involved.”
