EUG 2026: When Respect and Sportsmanship Mean More Than a Medal

In high-level competitive sport, the relentless focus on results, intense pressure, and desire to win can often overshadow the fundamental principles of fair play and athletic ethics. However, at the European Universities Games (EUG) 2026 in Salerno, the narrative is markedly different. During the exhilarating closing day of the Volleyball tournament, the spotlight was not solely trained on winning spikes, spectacular blocks, or the presentation of trophies. Alongside the gold, silver, and bronze medals, the awards ceremony featured a deeply moving and meaningful highlight: the presentation of the Fair Play Awards.

The significance of Fair Play in university sport extends far beyond simply obeying the written rules. It is a holistic attitude, a shared philosophy that unites young student-athletes from vastly different cultural, linguistic, and social backgrounds. In the women’s competition, the prestigious Fair Play Award was proudly earned by the host squad from the University of Salerno (ITA). Competing on home soil always carries a double burden: managing the expectations of home supporters while striving to perform at one’s best. The Salerno athletes acted as flawless ambassadors of hospitality and respect, distinguishing themselves in every match through exemplary behaviour towards opponents, referees, and court officials. Every gesture, from post-match handshakes to encouraging teammates during challenging rallies, conveyed a clear message: true competition only exists when guided by integrity.

In the men’s tournament, the honour was awarded to the West University of Timisoara (ROU). The Romanian team, who fought their way through to the medal rounds, combined top-tier technical performances with faultless sportsmanship. Even in moments of intense pressure, when a single point could decide the outcome of an entire tournament, the Timisoara players never resorted to poor conduct or heated disputes. Instead, they accepted every refereeing decision with commendable maturity and showed genuine respect towards their rivals.

The Fair Play Awards presented at EUG 2026 serve as a vital reminder that true success in university sport cannot be measured solely by the silverware in a trophy cabinet. Above all, it is measured by the moral legacy and international friendships these young people build. Winning a match requires skill and training; leaving a lasting impression through fairness and dignity requires character. It is precisely this character that the student-athletes of Salerno and Timisoara brought to the courts, proving that true victory always begins with mutual respect.
