UNISA’S Technological Commitment. Salvatore Ferrandino explains the effort behind the Games

EUG Salerno 2026 continues to be a resounding success, attracting large crowds and delivering outstanding sporting action. The venues hosting the eighth edition of the European Universities Games – running until 1 August across the University of Salerno’s campuses in Fisciano and Baronissi, as well as in 13 municipalities throughout the provinces of Salerno and Avellino – are welcoming enthusiastic spectators eager to support the student-athletes competing in the event.

While the sporting competitions unfold at full pace, another crucial challenge is taking place behind the scenes: managing the technological infrastructure, coordinating services across multiple venues, and ensuring uninterrupted live streaming coverage. This demanding task is carried out by the University of Salerno’s Office for IT Services Coordination and Digital Transition.

“Technology undoubtedly plays a leading role in events like these – explains Salvatore Ferrandino, Coordinator of Technological Services for EUG Salerno 2026. “Today – he adds – it is simply impossible to organize an event of this scale without a robust technological infrastructure. Its role is essential in every area—from live streaming of competitions and scoring systems to digital scoreboards and all the services that must operate continuously throughout the event”.

Much of this work remains invisible to the public, yet it is fundamental to ensuring that every competition runs smoothly.

“Our responsibility lies mainly in the hidden side of the operation”, Ferrandino continues. “We manage the connections, networks, cabling, and the entire infrastructure that enables the whole system to function. Today, technology has become a true commodity—we rely on it every day without realizing the immense amount of work required behind the scenes.

“We have been working on the European Universities Games for many months, nearly a full year. During this time, we have developed and implemented numerous activities, from managing the athletes’ database to producing and printing accreditation badges, which are essential for identifying participants and staff throughout the event. We have also designed and deployed the technological infrastructure needed to provide live streaming across all competition venues. Behind all of this – Ferrandino concludes – there is an extremely complex organizational machine, made up of many dedicated professionals who have worked with great commitment and determination to ensure that every aspect of the event operates at its very best”.
