Athletes protected by the Longevity Corner

Sport, fun, and health. EUG Salerno 2026, the European Universities Games currently taking place in Salerno and Avellino, has all the ingredients for success. While the sporting competitions have now entered their most exciting phase and entertainment takes center stage at the FanZone in Piazza del Sapere, on the campus of the University of Salerno, where hundreds of student-athletes gather every evening, participants’ health has been safeguarded throughout these first ten days of competition by the Longevity Corner. This mobile medical unit has been offering free health screenings and information on nutrition, physical activity, and prevention to student-athletes and their accompanying delegations.

Every day, participants can book specialist consultations in Cardiology, Dermatology, Internal Medicine and Metabolic Screening, Urology and Andrology, Breast Screening, and Dentistry. In addition, an oncological screening service with ultrasound-guided nutritional counselling has also been made available upon request.

“I believe this is one of the most important and valuable side initiatives of the Games,” said Rector Virgilio D’Antonio. “We are making the expertise of our Department of Medicine and Surgery available to everyone, involving not only our academic staff but also our students and medical residents. It is an important initiative that highlights the excellence of our University’s healthcare sector.”

The Longevity Corner was created through the successful collaboration between the University of Salerno and CUS Salerno, an organization that has always been committed to promoting the health and well-being of student-athletes.

“This is a real added value for the Games,” emphasized CUS Salerno President Lorenzo Lentini. “It is an outstanding initiative that perfectly combines sport and health. The Longevity Corner has become a key reference point for many of our guests, athletes who will return to their home countries as ambassadors of a healthier and more modern lifestyle.”

The Longevity Corner was conceived and organized by Antonio Bianchi, who has extensive experience in the healthcare sector.

“Human beings are what they eat, what they breathe, the physical activity they do, and the lifestyle they choose,” said Bianchi. “The One Health approach—the new perspective on protecting health – is the paradigm that brings all these dimensions together. The Students as Health Ambassadors project, promoted by the One Health Foundation and FederCUSI, is fully aligned with this vision and aims to spread and share its culture. I would like to thank the Department of Medicine at the University of Salerno, the General Directors of the Salerno Local Health Authority and the Ruggi University Hospital, as well as all the professionals involved—doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and midwives – who, in the true spirit of One Health, each contributed within their respective roles to the successful delivery of this initiative.”
